“Get away from her.”

The human’s underlings shrank back at his growl, filled with promises of pain and searing fire. He, however, stayed his ground; the sight of his chin lifted so proudly made the demon want to rip his head clean from his shoulders.

“Not that you would have much say in that,” the human smiled almost patronizingly, his gaze shifting to the girl that lay on the ground.

The air was thick with the smell of her blood and the sounds of her ragged little breaths. She would not last long — even he could sense death hovering over her, waiting for what little life she had left to dissipate completely. Something in him rebelled at the very thought of this girl dying. He had the means to save her from eternal death, but the accursed holy stone prevented him from doing anything more than snarling as the human presumed to touch her.

“Yes. She will do nicely,” the human nodded in approval, regarding the girl’s pale face with the air of a merchant inspecting livestock he intended to purchase. “We are taking her back with us.”

”Leave her be!” he howled, ruby red eyes alight with fury. The cave rumbled with the force of his bellow, and the girl gave a soft moan.

The human pushed at his underlings until they gathered up the girl, barely managing to get her onto the length of wood without dropping her from how their knees still shook. Cool blue eyes met the demon’s blazing red gaze without an trace of fear.

“You would do well to keep yourself out of human matters, demon. After all, you are still serving your sentence from the first time around.”

No matter how much he struggled, the blue stone remained firm as it had been all these years. Watching the human walk away (the human with the stench of deaths that were not his), he wondered why he was the one being punished when things more terrible than demons existed in this world.

“You are hurting, Fräulein.” ...

                “You are hurting, Fräulein.”

                She watches him warily, crimson eyes narrowed as though they were of a wild animal cornered. Her fingers crook, warning him that she can lash out, that she is not completely helpless.

                (If he could, he would laugh. Her weapons are forged for an entirely different battlefield.)

                “Someone precious has been taken from you.”

                A flash of pain flits across her face – ah, yes, there it is. No matter how strong a human (regardless of whether or not they had been made immortal), there would always be a crack in their soul.

                “Let me help you, Fräulein. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. So has been taken, so you will take away.”

                There is still hesitation in her eyes, and he can see that she has been forced to make the same choice before. This time, however, the voice that whispers into her ears is different. This time, the scales of Layla will tip.

                “Have you not suffered enough?”

                There is a moment that seems to last an eternity, and then—
